AORTIC STENOSIS – THE FACTS

What is aortic stenosis?

When someone has aortic stenosis, it is because there is a narrowing of part of the main blood vessel, or valve, that sends blood from their heart to their body.
The most common type is valve stenosis. This is when there is narrowing of the aortic valve – which is like a little door made of flaps in the heart that lets blood out into the aorta to go round the body. This could be because the valve is too small or thick, or because it doesn’t open properly. There can also be a narrowing of the aorta – that’s the main artery carrying blood from the heart to the body – either above or below the valve.
